The game is a sandbox so you can either play it completely your way or try out the missions and side quests which are light on story but interesting enough to get you engaged as they often get you to visit all corners of the map and introduce you to mechanics like lookout towers and feeding/sleeping zones amongst others. Tracking works well through a simple system of locating footprints which will change colour for the animal you following and fetus droppings that will inform you how long ago they have been there, giving you a indication of whether you should be moving more swiftly or starting the process of stalking. There is also a comprehensive skills and perk system that allows you to become more proficient with weaponry, tracking and hunting. Everything is fully upgradable from weapons, ammo, lures, clothing etc. You will be treated to stunning locations and a diverse eco system with weather cycles running through the day/night. From the lush forests and lakes of north west America to the African savannah which can be traversed on foot or vehicle. Starting with the maps which are many and vast with graphics that beautifully capture their surroundings.
What this game does offer is an experience that is a close to hunting as any game has ever attempted. As in real life animals don't conveniently stand around waiting for you to shoot them and will flee if you come steaming in and will be long gone by the time you reach the area you spotted them. Instead COTW requires stealth, cunning and most importantly, patience.

The Trophy Rating is a value given to the size/weight of the trophy thus, a larger trophy gives you a higher rating. Trophy Type is an specific characteristic of the Species (Weight, Skull Size, Antlers, Horns, Tusks) on which the Trophy Rating (TR) will be based on. Every difficulty has a range of Trophy Rating values. The Minimum Difficulty for all Species is 1 - Trivial and the Maximum Difficulty can vary depending on the species. This mean that at higher Difficulty level, the animal will pose a bigger challenge to hunt and will require more skill to call and stalk. The Difficulty reflects how "big" the animal is in terms of Trophy Rating and how aware the animal is of its environment. IMPORTANT: Having 100% in all three Bonuses gives you a Base Score of 500. There is chart in each Species page to indicate which weapon(s) is/are recommended.
